I've added more pics to the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards in the gallery. Also, MTV caught up with Aaron at the awards show where he talked about now Oscar winner Heath Ledger:

'I hope he wins,' actor says on Independent Spirit Awards red carpet. 'I think he's deserving of it.'

By Josh Horowitz

On the eve of a bittersweet occasion for Heath Ledger's friends, family and colleagues, Aaron Eckhart is unabashed in what he hopes will come to pass on Oscar night at the Kodak Theatre.

"I hope he wins. I think he's deserving of it," he told MTV News on the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet, just hours before the big event was set to get under way.

Ledger is, of course, the presumptive and sentimental favorite to take home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in "The Dark Knight." Critically hailed since the film was released in June, his work as the Joker instantly became a universally loved piece of pop art. It hasn't hurt Ledger's chances that the film itself was the must-see event of 2008; just this week, it became only the fourth film ever to pass $1 billion in worldwide sales.

Asked what he thought Ledger would make of all the accolades that have come in the wake of the film, Eckhart said, "I think he's very proud of the film and proud of his performance. He loved doing it. He was totally committed to it, obviously. He loved working with Chris Nolan."

For Eckhart, the regret over the untimely loss of the actor in January 2008 is manifold: "I feel bad for his family, but also for the fans that you guys can't talk to him and ask him about the movie and his life. I know he would have loved that."

Meanwhile, Eckhart playfully continued to hedge about the future for his character, Harvey "Two-Face" Dent, in the franchise. Just last month at the Golden Globes, Eckhart gave a long and seemingly knowing laugh when asked if he believes the character is still alive. On this red carpet, he again laughed off the question, asking MTV News, "What do you think?" When asked definitively if Dent is dead or not, Eckhart replied, "He's dead." He then laughed a hearty and seemingly knowing laugh again and walked off.

The Los Angeles times talked to Aaron about who he'll be rooting for during the Oscars (gee, too easy!)

At the Independent Spirit Awards this afternoon, The Dish Rag asked Aaron Eckhart how he felt about tomorrow's Oscars and the nomination of his "Dark Knight" co-star, the late Heath Ledger.

“Well, tomorrow I will probably be at my ranch, probably watering some trees. So yeah, I'm not going to the show but I'm rooting for Heath obviously. I have nothing but blessed thoughts for him. Maybe he wins and maybe he doesn't. It doesn't matter to me. He's a great man and a great actor."

Asked about Heath Ledger’s family’s announced plans to give the Oscar to his daughter, Matilda, he replied, “I think that would be beautiful."

With as many acting awards as her dad has posthumously won this year, Matilda will need a very large display shelf.

What’s next for Aaron?

He’s doing “The Rum Diary” with Johnny Depp and another Oscar 2009 nominee, Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor").

OK, we’re definitely gonna see that one.

2:22 p.m. Aaron Eckhart and Robin Wright Penn present Best First Feature. Geez, this show moves quickly. This is probably the category Coogan was referring to when he talked about nobody having seen the movies, though I'm mighty intrigued by "Afterschool" and "Sleep Dealer." I take that back, four films that haven't gotten distribution really and "Synecdoche, New York."

Aaron's next project - The Rum Diary!

BERLIN -- Aaron Eckhart and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins will be hitting the sauce in "Rum Diary," the adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel that stars Johnny Depp.

Eckhart is in negotiations while Jenkins is signed on for the movie, which Bruce Robinson adapted and is directing. Amber Heard also is on board.

Eckhart is part of a love triangle that sees him vying with Depp for Heard's affection. "Diary" is the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Eckhart would play Sanderson, a wealthy landowner who believes everything has a price and introduces Kemp to a different standard of living.

Jenkins is playing Lotterman, the man who oversees the rundown newspaper where Kemp works.

The project, which Depp, Christi Dembrowski and Graham King are producing, begins shooting March 30 in Puerto Rico. "Rum" is a production of King's GK Films and Depp's Infinitum Nihil. Also producing is Film Engine, with A.J. Dix, Anthony Rhulen and William Shively attached alongside Robert Kravis and Greg Shapiro. GK Films is preselling at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Eckhart, who played Harvey Dent/Two-Face in "The Dark Knight," also is attached to star in "Battle: Los Angeles," a sci-fi actioner from Columbia Pictures, director Jonathan Liebesman and producer Neal Moritz.

The CAA-repped actor next stars opposite Jennifer Aniston in "Traveling."

Gersh-repped Jenkins, nominated for the best actor Oscar for "The Visitor," just signed on for a stint in Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's mystery-shrouded horror project "Cabin in the Woods" for MGM/UA. He is additionally repped by Bill Treusch.
